Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who capture and sell Indian rollers, the state bird of Telangana, during the Dasara festival. He urged people not to encourage the practice of clipping the birds’ wings, confining them in cages or displaying them for festive purposes. In a post on X, Sajjanar said festivals should represent happiness, freedom and compassion towards all living beings. He questioned the idea of seeking good fortune by depriving birds of their freedom and subjecting them to suffering.
Sajjanar highlighted the importance of Indian rollers in maintaining ecological balance and supporting farmers. He stated that capturing, selling and displaying the birds are offences under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. He appealed to the public to report any instances of birds being confined by calling the toll-free numbers 1800 4255364 and 98033 38666, or Dial 112. He also urged people not to encourage displays involving captive birds and to act responsibly to protect wildlife and ensure the birds can fly freely in their natural habitat.
