Strict Action Against Extortion and Harassment in the Name of Transgender Persons: Telangana DGP

Telangana DGP C.V. Anand has directed police commissioners to launch special drives against incidents of forced money collection, threats, harassment and organised begging carried out in the name of transgender persons. The directions came after an incident in Chintal, Hyderabad, where an amount of ₹50,000 was allegedly demanded during a housewarming ceremony.

The DGP said strict legal action would be taken against individuals who harass members of the public, issue threats or take the law into their own hands. He noted that the government was taking steps to provide transgender persons with dignified opportunities and a respectable position in society, including employment opportunities in departments such as Traffic and HYDRAA.

C.V. Anand observed that the alleged unlawful activities of a few individuals were causing a negative perception of the entire transgender community. He directed the police to take appropriate action against those involved in criminal or coercive activities while ensuring that members of the community who are not involved in such offences are not unfairly targeted.

The police have also advised the public to immediately report incidents involving forced demands for money, threats or harassment at the nearest police station. In emergencies, people can contact the emergency helpline 112. Citizens have also been encouraged to provide videos, photographs or other available evidence to assist the police investigation.
