Southern Railway has issued a warning to passengers who disturb fellow travellers by playing music or videos at high volume on mobile phones or speaking loudly using speakerphones. Such behaviour can affect the comfort of other passengers, particularly in crowded coaches. The railway has urged passengers to follow travel etiquette and avoid creating unnecessary noise during journeys.
According to the report, first-time offenders may face a fine of up to ₹1,000. Repeated violations could attract a fine of up to ₹5,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, depending on the applicable legal provisions. Southern Railway has also asked officials to raise awareness at stations and on trains. Passengers are advised to use headphones or earphones when listening to music or watching videos and to keep phone conversations at a reasonable volume. Anyone experiencing disturbances caused by fellow passengers can submit a complaint through the Rail Madad app. The precise penalty in an individual case will depend on the applicable law and enforcement action.
