Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has been elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society in the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone in her scientific career. She follows in the footsteps of her father, Bharat Ratna recipient M. S. Swaminathan, who was also a Fellow of the same institution.
The Royal Society, one of the world’s oldest scientific academies, has previously included legendary scientists such as Isaac Newton among its fellows. Soumya Swaminathan’s selection was announced by former CSIR chief Raghunath Mashelkar, who noted that this is a rare achievement, highlighting that both father and daughter from India have now earned Fellowship in the same elite scientific body for the first time.
