Indian Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar has received a special invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following his courageous actions during the mid-air cockpit attack on a Dubai–Tel Aviv flight. Netanyahu invited Machchhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations next May by lighting a ceremonial flame, an honour traditionally associated with Israeli citizens.
During a phone conversation with Machchhar, Netanyahu praised him as a hero of India, Israel and the world. Machchhar, who is recovering in Abu Dhabi, had managed to open the cockpit door despite being injured during the attack, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene. Netanyahu described the invitation as a special recognition of Machchhar’s courage.
