Around 2,300 North Korean soldiers who fought alongside Russia in the war against Ukraine have reportedly died, according to a report by the BBC. The estimates were made after analysing satellite images and newly built memorial structures in North Korea’s capital. South Korea had earlier stated that North Korea sent nearly 11,000 troops to support Russia in the conflict.
Reports said North Korean soldiers participated in battles in Ukraine’s Kursk region during August 2024. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered the construction of a museum to honour soldiers who died in the war. The BBC analysed images of the memorials and construction work to estimate the number of casualties among North Korean troops.
