Authorities in Kolkata have begun removing a 70 foot statue of football legend Lionel Messi, just six months after it was unveiled with great fanfare. The statue, located in the Lake Town area, was found to be swaying dangerously during strong winds, raising safety concerns among local residents. Hydraulic cranes were deployed on Monday to carry out the removal process.
Following complaints from the public, engineers inspected the structure and identified several construction flaws, including an improperly positioned foundation and loose fittings. Officials warned that the approaching monsoon season could increase the risk of an accident. The statue had been installed as a tribute to Messi after Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph. Its removal so soon after inauguration has disappointed many football fans.
