Setback for Danam Nagender in Supreme Court

Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender has suffered a setback in the Supreme Court, which dismissed his plea challenging the Telangana High Court’s decision to disqualify him as an MLA. The Supreme Court held that there was no reason to interfere with the High Court’s verdict under the anti-defection law. The High Court had disqualified Nagender after he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad on a Congress ticket while continuing as a BRS MLA.

With the Supreme Court upholding the High Court’s order, the Khairatabad Assembly seat remains vacant, paving the way for a fresh election in the constituency. The High Court had held that Nagender’s disqualification would take effect from April 23, 2024, when he contested the Lok Sabha election as a Congress candidate. The Supreme Court’s dismissal of his plea leaves the High Court’s disqualification order in force.
