Saudi Arabia has reportedly launched an investigation into how missiles and drones attributed to Yemen’s Houthi rebels managed to evade its air defence systems during an attack on Riyadh’s international airport. According to the report, the incident left around 13 people dead and more than 300 injured. Preliminary findings cited by officials suggest that the Houthis may have launched a large number of drones first, potentially helping cruise and ballistic missiles reach their targets. Investigators are examining why the incoming projectiles were not detected or intercepted in time, despite travelling more than 1,000 kilometres.
The Houthis are reported to possess ballistic missiles and advanced guidance systems capable of changing course during flight, presenting challenges for Saudi Arabia’s Patriot interceptors and other air defence equipment. Further attacks against Saudi Arabia were also reported on Monday. Meanwhile, UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash called for coordinated action among Gulf nations to protect the region against attacks by Iran and its allied groups. He warned that strikes against Saudi Arabia could threaten the security of the UAE and other Gulf states. The reported casualties and details of the Riyadh incident would require independent confirmation.
