Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, targeting multiple locations with ballistic missiles and drones. According to Kyiv officials, at least 12 people were killed, while several buildings suffered extensive damage. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble. The attacks came just ahead of the scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.
Russia's Defence Ministry claimed the strikes targeted Ukraine's military-industrial facilities, fuel depots, and energy infrastructure in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure. Hours before the assault, President Zelensky had warned that Moscow was preparing one of its largest attacks on Kyiv and urged residents to move to safer locations. He also claimed intelligence reports suggested Russia planned a major offensive immediately after the US Independence Day celebrations. Meanwhile, President Trump reportedly held a 90-minute phone conversation with Vladimir Putin regarding efforts to end the war and had also spoken with Zelensky ahead of the NATO Summit beginning on July 7 in Türkiye.
