Remembering Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy: The People’s Leader Who Left a Lasting Legacy

Former united Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) is remembered as a charismatic leader whose political career was closely associated with welfare and people-oriented governance. His Praja Prasthanam padayatra helped him understand the hardships faced by farmers, workers and ordinary families. After becoming Chief Minister in May 2004, he introduced several welfare and development programmes aimed at improving the lives of economically weaker sections.

Among YSR’s major initiatives was the Arogyasri healthcare scheme, which enabled eligible poor families to access treatment at corporate and other empanelled hospitals. His government also implemented the fee reimbursement scheme to help students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds pursue higher education. Measures aimed at providing opportunities to underprivileged Muslim youth through reservations in education and employment were also among the initiatives associated with his tenure.

YSR placed agriculture and rural development at the centre of his governance. Through Jalayagnam, his government took up irrigation projects involving dams and canals with the objective of improving water availability for farmers. His administration also provided free electricity to farmers and introduced subsidised rice at ₹2 a kg. Welfare measures such as pensions for senior citizens and other vulnerable sections, along with the Indiramma housing scheme, were aimed at providing greater social security to disadvantaged families. The launch of the 108 ambulance service and establishment of Indian Institutes of Information Technology were among other initiatives during his tenure.

YSR’s second term was cut short by tragedy. On September 2, 2009, he was travelling by helicopter to Chittoor district for the Rachabanda programme when the aircraft crashed amid adverse weather conditions. His death was confirmed the following morning. Years after his demise, he continues to be remembered for his public service and welfare-oriented policies. Schemes such as Arogyasri, fee reimbursement, irrigation initiatives, housing and other programmes remain closely associated with his political legacy and his enduring connection with the people.
