The Madhya Pradesh government has prepared the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, introducing new provisions for couples in live-in relationships. According to the proposed legislation, couples living together will be required to register their relationship. Failure to register within the prescribed period may attract a jail term of up to three months.
The draft Bill also makes it mandatory for couples to officially register the termination of their live-in relationship. In addition, records of registered live-in couples will be maintained by local police stations. The proposed provisions are expected to spark widespread discussion on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state.
