The Railway Board has rejected the Telangana government's proposal to provide free travel on MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) trains from June 2. In its communication to the state government, the Railway Board stated that the MMTS project is already operating under significant financial losses and that several dues payable by the state government remain pending.
According to railway officials, MMTS incurred losses of nearly ₹160 crore in the last financial year. In addition, the Telangana government is yet to clear outstanding dues of around ₹490 crore. The Railway Board clarified that it would consider the proposal only if the state government formally assures that it will bear the entire financial burden arising from free travel. Until such a commitment is made, the proposal will not be approved.
