The Indian Navy has tested the Rafale-Marine (Rafale-M) fighter aircraft aboard the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant off Goa. Officials examined the aircraft’s ability to take off from and land on the warship, assessing its operational compatibility with the carrier. The Rafale-M is manufactured by France-based Dassault Aviation. India has signed an agreement with France worth approximately ₹63,000 crore to procure 26 Rafale-M aircraft for the Navy. The order includes 22 single-seat fighters and four twin-seat aircraft, intended to strengthen India’s carrier-based combat capabilities.
The Rafale-M is capable of reaching a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 and measures approximately 15.3 metres in length. It is powered by M88 turbofan engines and can deploy air-to-air missiles. The aircraft can also refuel while airborne, extending its operational flexibility. Deliveries from France are expected to begin between late 2028 and early 2029, with the entire fleet scheduled to be delivered by 2030. Once inducted, the aircraft are expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime air power and strengthen the country’s defence capabilities at sea.
