Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s critical remarks against the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing them as unlawful and extremely cruel. She urged countries around the world to protect the ICC and the international justice system. The development gained attention after the United States announced sanctions against the court, where Pillay had worked, just hours after the Nobel Peace Prize announcement. The ICC had previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid allegations concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Navi Pillay was recognised for her contributions to strengthening international justice and the rule of law. She provided legal assistance to Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid in South Africa, and served on a commission that concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza constituted genocide. Pillay has also served as a judge in three international courts. Reacting to the recognition, she described it as wonderful that work of this nature had received such an honour, adding that the recognition belonged not only to her but also to her colleagues.
