Pranay Murder Case Convict Abdul Bari Dies

Abdul Bari, who was serving a life sentence in the sensational 2018 murder of Pranay Kumar, died of cardiac arrest at Cherlapally Central Prison in Hyderabad. On Thursday, September 24, Bari reportedly complained of chest pain and was immediately shifted to Gandhi Hospital. Doctors attempted to revive him but declared him dead. Prison officials said Bari had a history of heart-related problems and had received medical treatment on earlier occasions.

Pranay Kumar was murdered in Miryalaguda on September 14, 2018, after marrying Amrutha Varshini against her family’s wishes. Investigators alleged that her father, Maruthi Rao, had orchestrated the killing with the help of others and a hired assailant. In March 2025, a Nalgonda court sentenced contract killer Subhash Kumar Sharma to death and awarded life imprisonment to Abdul Bari and five other accused. Maruthi Rao died by suicide in March 2020 while the case was under trial. Bari had also previously been arrested in the murder case of former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya, but was acquitted in that case.
