A powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines early today, with the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recording its magnitude at 8.2 on the Richter scale. The quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean seabed, triggering urgent tsunami warnings for coastal regions of the Philippines and Indonesia.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also measured the quake at 7.7 magnitude and issued a tsunami alert for northern Sulawesi. Authorities warned that waves could rise over one meter above normal levels within a 300 km radius of the epicenter. Strong tremors were felt in Sarangani province and Mindanao islands.
