A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck southern Panama on October 9, 2026, according to reports citing the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The shallow earthquake shook buildings across the country, including in the capital, Panama City, prompting residents to evacuate offices and other buildings. Its epicentre was reported near the rural community of Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province. Several buildings sustained structural damage, while videos and television footage showed people gathering outside amid fears of further tremors.
More than 40 aftershocks were reported following the main earthquake. Power outages affected six provinces, and flights at Tocumen International Airport were temporarily suspended before operations began returning to normal. A tsunami threat was also issued after the quake and was later lifted. Authorities continued assessing the damage and monitoring the situation. Despite the disruption, the Panama Canal remained operational. Further details about the extent of the damage and any casualties depended on official assessments.
