West Bengal witnessed a major political upheaval as the Trinamool Congress lost power following an unexpected defeat, while the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government in the state for the first time. The reaction of Mamata Banerjee has now become a topic of widespread discussion. Despite the significant loss, she reportedly hesitated to accept the defeat and did not immediately meet the Governor to submit her resignation. Until Saturday morning, her profile on X continued to describe her as the “Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal.”
As Suvendu Adhikari took oath as Chief Minister, Mamata quietly updated her profile but avoided using the term “Former.” Instead, she described herself as “Chief Minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th, 17th Assembly)” and highlighted her role as the founder of the Trinamool Congress. The delay in updating her bio drew criticism on social media, with users even tagging Elon Musk and the platform’s management. Observers noted that while she avoided the word “Former,” the change indirectly signaled acceptance of defeat. Following the end of the Assembly term on May 7, the House was dissolved by Governor R.N. Ravi, automatically ending her tenure as Chief Minister.
