Police have arrested a 19 year old man accused of plotting an armed attack on a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, in the United States. The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, allegedly planned to open fire inside the temple on the 11th of this month. Police reportedly recovered a rifle, a large quantity of ammunition, magazines and extremist literature from his residence. The suspect, who is from Palatine, was identified as a restaurant cashier. Reports allege that extremist ideology and hatred towards Hindus influenced his plans.
The alleged attack was reportedly thwarted after the rifle malfunctioned, forcing the suspect to return home. The incident has prompted concern from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the alleged plot as deeply disturbing and urged the US government to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and protect Hindu temples across the country.
