Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has spoken out after an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, came to light. He said he was praying with his family at the temple when the alleged incident unfolded. According to reports, 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis allegedly planned to attack the place of worship, but his firearm malfunctioned, preventing the planned shooting. Krishnamoorthi said the incident highlighted the dangers posed by anti-Indian hatred and white supremacist ideology in the United States. Several lawmakers and civil society representatives condemned the alleged plot and called for stronger security at religious institutions.
Authorities said Paporakis had allegedly been planning an attack for an extended period and was arrested following information provided to law enforcement. Investigators reportedly recovered weapons and material expressing white supremacist views from his residence. New York Senator Chuck Schumer condemned the alleged plot, stressing that discrimination has no place in the United States and that people of every race and religion should be able to live freely. Congressman Brad Sherman and other lawmakers also called for action against anti-Indian hostility and stronger protection for minority places of worship. The investigation into the alleged attack is ongoing.
