Concerns about a possible plague outbreak have surfaced in Russia after a 28-year-old laboratory technician, identified as Shipilova, died following an illness. She reportedly worked at an anti-plague research institute in Siberia. Local media reports suggested that her illness could be linked to a laboratory incident involving plague bacteria, while Russian public health authorities have maintained that pneumonia was the cause of death and that no dangerous microorganisms were detected in her body.
According to local reports, a test tube containing plague bacteria broke inside the laboratory on September 25. Shipilova reportedly became unwell afterward and was later hospitalized as her condition worsened. Following the incident, authorities placed around 200 family members, colleagues and other close contacts under medical observation. Quarantine measures were also reportedly introduced at several hospitals, with five facilities temporarily closed. Officials have said that no symptoms have been observed among those under quarantine and that there is currently no evidence of a wider plague outbreak.
