Farmers in Telangana are facing mounting difficulties as a rainfall deficit and pest infestations threaten crops across nearly five lakh acres, according to information attributed to the Agriculture Department. The problem has been reported in several districts, including Warangal, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, Suryapet and Sangareddy. With insufficient rainfall adding to concerns over water availability, farmers fear further losses during the current crop season.
Paddy fields have reportedly been affected by leaf blight, stem borers and leaf-folding pests across large areas. Cotton growers are dealing with pink bollworms, thrips and green leafhoppers, while maize, soybean, pigeon pea, groundnut, chilli and tomato crops are also facing various pest and disease problems. Some farmers say pesticide applications have not produced the expected results. The government has directed Agriculture Department officials to inspect fields and educate farmers about suitable control measures. Experts recommend integrated pest management, applying appropriate pesticides only when necessary and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilisers. Farmers are also being advised to consult local agricultural officers and consider less water-intensive crops for the upcoming rabi season, depending on local conditions.
