Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Forest and Environment Minister Pawan Kalyan has directed aqua processing and pre-processing units to strictly comply with environmental regulations. He called for measures to prevent untreated aqua waste from contaminating rivers, canals, ponds, estuaries and groundwater. The issue was reviewed during a meeting with representatives of the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) in Mangalagiri, with the environmental compliance of aqua units coming under discussion.
Officials informed Pawan Kalyan that the state has 119 aqua processing units and 12 pre-processing units. Samples have so far been collected from 82 units, with variations detected in parameters including pH, total suspended solids (TSS) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) at some facilities. Show-cause notices have been issued to 10 non-compliant units, giving them two weeks to undertake corrective measures. Pawan Kalyan stressed that pollution should be prevented at its source and called for regular inspections and testing.
