The Pandharpur Vitthal-Rukmini Temple, located in Maharashtra’s Solapur district on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River, is a major pilgrimage destination for devotees of Lord Vishnu. The presiding deity is worshipped as Vitthal or Panduranga, while Goddess Rukmini is also revered at the temple complex. According to local religious tradition, the temple’s origins are connected to Pundalik, a devotee whose story highlights the importance of serving one’s parents. The legend says that after recognising his mistakes, Pundalik devoted himself to caring for his parents. When Lord Vishnu arrived to meet him, Pundalik asked the deity to wait on a brick while he completed his service. Lord Vitthal is believed to have stood on the brick until Pundalik returned, eventually remaining there to bless devotees.
Another part of the local legend explains that Rukmini came to Pandharpur while searching for Lord Krishna and chose to remain there in a separate shrine. Devotees traditionally visit the Chandrabhaga River before proceeding to the temple, although bathing practices depend on individual circumstances. Many worship Pundalik before seeking the darshan of Lord Vitthal and then visit Rukmini’s shrine. Daily rituals and aarti are performed at the temple, while Ekadashi observances attract large numbers of pilgrims. The Ashadhi Ekadashi festival, associated with the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage, is especially important, drawing devotees from Maharashtra and neighbouring states, including Karnataka and Telangana. The temple’s stories and customs continue to reflect the enduring place of devotion, humility and service in the region’s religious traditions.
