A report by the National Crime Records Bureau has revealed severe overcrowding in central prisons of Andhra Pradesh, with occupancy reaching 124.8 percent beyond capacity. The overall prison occupancy rate in the state stands at 90.8 percent. Out of 7,861 inmates, 5,705 are undertrial prisoners.
The report also highlights a severe shortage of staff, with 797 posts lying vacant. It further notes the absence of borstals for the rehabilitation of young offenders. Additionally, 260 prisoners are reported to be suffering from mental health issues.
