The Income Tax Department has announced that more than 1.7 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2026-27 have already been filed as the deadline for submitting ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 approaches. According to the department, the due date for filing these returns is July 31, and more than 10 lakh returns were filed on Friday alone, reflecting a significant rise in taxpayer compliance.
ITR-1 (Sahaj) is meant for individual taxpayers with an annual income of up to ₹50 lakh, including income from salary, one house property, and agricultural income of up to ₹5,000. ITR-2 is applicable to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) earning income from capital gains and other eligible sources, excluding business or professional income. The department has urged eligible taxpayers to file their returns well before the deadline to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
