RTC has set a target of operating 3,000 electric buses in the Greater city limits within the next two years. As the government plans to convert the Greater Zone into a complete EV zone by December 2027, RTC has started preparing extensive plans in that direction. Currently, 450 electric buses are already running on city roads, and the corporation is planning to add 1,500 more buses under the PM e-Drive scheme along with another 1,500 buses with state government support.
RTC is currently serving around 25 lakh passengers daily in the Greater region, including nearly 18 lakh women travelling free under the Mahalaxmi scheme. To avoid inconvenience to passengers, officials are focusing on increasing the number of buses and expanding services. Plans are also underway to establish EV charging stations in 26 depots. Authorities aim to operate only electric buses within the city limits in the future, while diesel buses may run only beyond the Outer Ring Road.
