The Omicron RF.5 variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Andhra Pradesh during genome sequencing of positive samples. Four samples from Kadapa district were sent to a virology lab in Pune for analysis, and the results have now confirmed the presence of this sublineage. State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav reviewed the situation with officials and assured that there is no need for panic, emphasizing the importance of caution and monitoring.
Director of Medical Education Dr. Vishnuvardhan stated that RF.5 is a sublineage of the Omicron variant and is being monitored globally by the World Health Organization. He clarified that there is no scientific evidence suggesting that this variant is more dangerous than other Omicron strains. Symptoms remain similar, including sore throat, cough, fever, headache, fatigue, and body aches. The state government confirmed that hospitals are fully prepared with beds, kits, and infrastructure, with 16 COVID cases reported so far.
