Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Captain Smit Machchhar to participate in lighting a ceremonial torch during Israel’s Independence Day celebrations. The invitation was extended during a phone conversation between Netanyahu and Modi on Thursday, during which the leaders discussed strengthening India-Israel relations and exchanged views on the situation in West Asia. Both leaders reportedly emphasised the importance of peace and stability in the region. The invitation also highlights the growing diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Captain Machchhar has reportedly received praise for his actions during an alleged cockpit incident involving a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv on September 30. According to reports, he confronted the co-pilot after an alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft, helping other crew members and passengers enter the cockpit and restrain the co-pilot. The flight was reportedly carrying more than 170 people at the time. Netanyahu had previously spoken with the captain and praised him for his courage, describing him as a hero. The invitation recognises the pilot’s reported actions while underscoring the close relationship between India and Israel.
