Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 this year. Reports quoting the Russian Embassy in South Africa stated that Putin’s participation has already been confirmed. Chinese President Xi Jinping is also likely to attend the summit, although China has not yet made an official announcement.
Xi Jinping last visited India in 2019, before tensions escalated between the two countries following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020 and border tensions near Tawang in 2022. Later, Prime Minister Modi and Xi met during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. Amid reports of differences within the BRICS bloc over geopolitical issues and the Iran conflict, the possible participation of both Putin and Xi has attracted global attention. Recently, BRICS foreign ministers also failed to release a joint statement due to disagreements among member nations.
