

Twenty-year-old R Praggnanandhaa created history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess Tournament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded his remarkable achievement, calling it a significant milestone in his career. He expressed confidence that the young grandmaster would achieve many more successes in the future. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan also congratulated him, stating that the victory reflects his exceptional talent, dedication, and years of hard work.
This was only Praggnanandhaa’s second appearance in the Norway Chess Tournament, making the achievement even more remarkable. He defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen twice during the event, who is a seven-time winner of the tournament. Despite losing three of the first six rounds, Praggnanandhaa staged a brilliant comeback with four consecutive wins. Meanwhile, another Indian star Gukesh finished at the bottom with 8 points after losing to Carlsen in the final round.
