Minister Narayana Launches Andhra Pradesh’s First Slum Redevelopment Project in Visakhapatnam

Andhra Pradesh has launched its first slum redevelopment programme in Visakhapatnam as part of the government’s plans for the development of the Visakhapatnam Economic Region. State Minister Narayana performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of the Velampeta slum. The project aims to benefit 177 families who have reportedly been living without proper housing facilities for nearly five decades. Under the project, 177 housing units will be constructed across a total built-up area of 2,691 square feet, with the proposed structure reaching a height of around 45 metres.

According to Minister Narayana, the Velampeta Slum Redevelopment Project is being taken up at an estimated cost of ₹28.44 crore, with each housing unit valued at around ₹16.07 lakh. The buildings will be constructed using shear-wall technology and will comprise 12 floors. The government has set a target of completing the project within nine months. Narayana described it as the first model of its kind in the state and said plans are being prepared to undertake similar redevelopment projects in other slum areas, with the broader objective of improving the living standards of the urban poor.
