Reported data from government mental health hospitals in Gujarat indicate an increase in cases across several mental health categories between 2018–19 and 2025–26. Depression cases rose from 214,546 to 306,477, while anxiety and stress-related cases increased from 204,361 to 265,487. Schizophrenia cases climbed from 163,206 to 216,182. The figures also show increases in mood-related disorders, from 127,058 to 173,007, and cases classified as brain-related conditions, from 131,643 to 195,755. These figures point to a growing need for accessible mental health services, although the data alone do not establish the reasons behind the increases.
Childhood-related mental health cases also increased, from 56,298 in 2018–19 to 91,916 in 2025–26, a rise of approximately 63%. Early recognition of emotional, behavioural and developmental difficulties can help children receive appropriate support. Cases among older adults reportedly rose from around 50,000 to nearly 85,000 over the period described. Loneliness, retirement, physical limitations and reduced social interaction can affect emotional well-being in later life. Supportive families, social connections and access to professional care can help children and older adults manage mental health challenges.
