Indian security agencies have foiled an alleged attempt by an international drug-smuggling network to bring narcotics into India through the sea route. In a joint operation conducted by the Indian Coast Guard and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in the Arabian Sea, drugs valued at more than Rs 3,000 crore were seized. On September 25, authorities intercepted a suspicious Iranian boat near the international maritime boundary and recovered 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine during a search. Five Pakistani nationals aboard the vessel were arrested.
The operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about a large-scale attempt to smuggle narcotics through the sea route. The arrested suspects and the seized drugs were subsequently brought to Mumbai under tight security. Investigators are now examining the source of the narcotics, their intended destination in India and the identities of the alleged masterminds behind the international drug network. The Gujarat ATS, Coast Guard, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other central agencies are jointly pursuing the investigation.
