Raksha Bandhan, which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, is expected to drive strong retail activity across India this year. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates that rakhi sales alone could reach nearly Rs. 25,000 crore. When purchases of sweets, dry fruits, gifts, clothing, electronics and other festive products are included, the total business generated during the festival could cross Rs. 30,000 crore.
CAIT said Delhi is expected to account for around Rs. 4,000 crore of the overall business. According to CAIT National Secretary Praveen Khandelwal, the flow of Chinese-made rakhis has declined over the past two to three years, with consumers increasingly preferring locally manufactured rakhis and other domestic products. He also noted that younger shoppers are showing greater interest in theme-based rakhis.
