US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the Trump administration’s approach to Russian energy supplies, saying Washington must balance pressure on countries linked to Russia with the wider economic consequences of its policies. In an interview with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi, Rubio acknowledged tensions between the United States and India following additional tariffs imposed over India’s purchases of Russian oil. He described the situation as a “balancing act,” explaining that efforts to pressure Russia over the war in Ukraine can also have unintended effects on other countries. Rubio expressed hope that a trade agreement between Washington and New Delhi could help resolve the differences, while recognising that tensions remain.
Rubio also discussed the US approach to sanctions and exemptions affecting Russian energy imports. The report says President Donald Trump’s administration has taken steps to ease restrictions on certain Russian diesel supplies amid concerns about rising global fuel prices. The move has drawn criticism from some European allies and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The broader debate reflects the challenge of balancing pressure on Moscow with energy security and domestic economic concerns. India has faced additional US tariffs over its Russian oil purchases, which Washington previously argued were supporting Russia’s war effort. The latest developments could influence energy markets and ongoing trade negotiations, although the eventual outcome of discussions between India and the United States remains uncertain.
