US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has addressed concerns over changes to American work visa and immigration rules, stating that the measures are not specifically directed at India. He said the policies apply globally and reflect Washington’s priority of protecting American workers and national interests. Rubio noted that India also prioritises the interests of its citizens, adding that the administration of President Donald Trump follows the same principle by putting American workers and the country first.
Rubio also highlighted shortcomings in the US immigration system, including alleged fraud and misuse of business-related immigration programmes, saying stricter measures are intended to address these problems. Meanwhile, immigration-related actions affecting employment-based green card procedures and proposed fees linked to the F-1 student Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme have raised concerns among Indian professionals and students. India maintains that the movement of skilled workers benefits both countries by supporting innovation and productivity. The US government, however, maintains that its policy changes are aimed at protecting domestic workers and strengthening the immigration system.
