Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Goud has alleged that the Election Commission deleted a large number of votes in Telangana in the name of the SIR process. He demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah be held responsible for the alleged deletions and sought an extension of the SIR deadline in the state. Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday, he alleged that constitutional institutions had been weakened under the BJP since 2014 and claimed that the Election Commission was also being influenced.
Mahesh Kumar Goud questioned the use of the 2002 electoral roll as a reference for determining voters and said eligible citizens should not be deprived of their voting rights on that basis. He demanded that every eligible citizen be given voting rights without linking eligibility to the old electoral list. He also unveiled a poster aimed at registering 18-year-olds as new voters ahead of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary on August 20. Later, speaking at an Adivasi Congress executive meeting chaired by MLC Shankar Naik, he assured that Adivasi and Lambada communities would be given due representation in the Congress party.
