The Madras High Court delivered a significant ruling stating that having a foreign name or citizenship cannot be a reason to deny a person’s Hindu identity. The court clarified that no formal certificates or specific rituals are required to adopt Hinduism, emphasizing the importance of individual faith and belief.
The court directed that Laura Frances Iyengar, a US citizen, be recognized as a Hindu devotee. It also quashed the orders issued by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, which had described her as an “American Christian woman.” The High Court underlined that religious identity must be determined by personal belief rather than official classification.
