The Gujarat High Court has upheld the trial court's verdict in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case, confirming the death sentence for 38 convicts and life imprisonment for 11 others. The judgment was delivered after an extensive hearing on appeals filed against the 2022 verdict of the special court, making it one of the most significant rulings in one of India's biggest terror cases.
On July 26, 2008, terrorists carried out coordinated bomb blasts at 21 locations across Ahmedabad within just 70 minutes, killing 56 people and injuring 246 others. Following the attacks, several unexploded bombs were recovered from Surat. Of the 78 accused tried in the case, the special court in 2022 convicted 49 persons and acquitted 28, with the High Court now affirming the sentences awarded to the convicted individuals.
