A tragic stampede occurred at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, West Bengal, on the evening of October 17. Reports published on October 18 said at least 19 people had died and 25 others were injured. The injured were taken to hospitals, including Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, for treatment. Preliminary accounts indicate that heavy rain and a sudden surge of visitors contributed to the chaos. Confusion surrounding announcements and the movement of people through narrow access routes are also being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities subsequently restricted access to the pandal.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the affected area and hospitals and announced compensation of ₹25 lakh and a Group D government job for the family of each deceased person. The state also announced financial assistance for the injured. Police detained people connected with the organising committee and security arrangements as the investigation continued. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced assistance from the PM CARES Fund, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled scheduled engagements amid the tragedy. The precise sequence of events and responsibility for the incident remain subject to investigation.
