Actor and Member of Parliament Kamal Haasan has criticised remarks attributed to SpaceX chief Elon Musk concerning India. Musk reportedly used the sarcastic phrase “Prime Minister Ambani of India,” prompting reactions from political and public figures. Responding on social media, Haasan argued that no billionaire, whether Indian or American, should dictate the policies of a sovereign country. He maintained that governments must make decisions based on their national interests and questioned calls for free trade when Western countries also impose measures to protect their own industries.
Haasan cited the United States’ reported 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles as an example of protecting domestic manufacturing. He said India, too, has the right to safeguard its industries and determine its own future as a democratic nation rather than being treated like a colony. Actor and MP Kangana Ranaut reshared Haasan’s post and praised his response, saying that he had answered Musk directly and clearly. The exchange has drawn attention on social media, with the debate focusing on national sovereignty, trade policies and the influence of wealthy individuals on government decisions.
