The decision to designate alternative protest venues in Delhi has raised questions about whether Ramlila Maidan can accommodate demonstrations previously held at Jantar Mantar. According to the information provided, Ramlila Maidan has limited booking availability, with only December 29, 30 and 31 currently open for reservations this year. A full-day booking costs ₹50,000, along with a refundable security deposit of ₹55,000. Including taxes, the total advance payment comes to approximately ₹1.21 lakh. Bookings must be made through the Horticulture Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and a no-objection certificate from Delhi Police is mandatory. A smaller section may be available free of charge for gatherings, but it can accommodate only around 150 people.
The venue’s suitability has also become a political issue. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned how protests could be organised when other events, including Ramlila celebrations, had already been booked. Officials have also raised concerns about traffic congestion because the ground is close to three hospitals and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi headquarters. The venue has a long political history, hosting major rallies and public meetings over several decades, including events involving national leaders and Arvind Kejriwal’s oath-taking ceremonies as Delhi chief minister. Under a Delhi Police standing order issued on October 11, Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground were designated as alternative protest venues. The police said separate standard operating procedures would be issued for demonstrations at these locations. Whether the new arrangements will provide convenient and affordable spaces for protest groups remains to be seen.
