The grand Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 begins on July 16, as Lord Jagannath, along with Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, embarks on the sacred journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in magnificent chariots. Millions of devotees from across India and around the world gather in Puri to witness this centuries old festival.
Before the chariots begin their journey, the sacred ritual 'Chhera Pahanra' is performed by the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, who symbolically sweeps the path with a golden broom. The ritual signifies humility, equality, selfless service, and the belief that everyone is equal before Lord Jagannath, regardless of status or position. The golden broom also represents purity, prosperity, and respect.
