India’s First LNG Train Flagged Off in Gujarat

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The train uses a diesel-LNG dual-fuel system, with two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars converted to operate on both fuels. The system can replace around 40% of diesel consumption with LNG and is aimed at reducing fuel costs and emissions.

Amit Shah Addressing the gathering, Shah highlighted the changes in Indian Railways over the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referred to projects such as dedicated freight corridors, rapid rail systems and advanced railway infrastructure. He also cited a decline in annual diesel consumption from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, while railway electrification has reached 99.6%, according to figures presented at the event.
