In a major boost for millions of railway passengers across India, the Ministry of Railways is set to roll out a revamped version of the IRCTC ticket booking website. The beta version of the new platform, designed with enhanced features and improved performance, will be launched on July 15. According to officials, the upgraded website will be significantly faster, more user-friendly, and offer a smoother booking experience compared to the current portal.
The overhaul comes after students from the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, highlighted several issues with the existing IRCTC website, including frequent CAPTCHA prompts, unnecessary pop-ups, and delays during ticket bookings. During a meeting with the students last month, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured them that the platform would be modernized. Fulfilling that promise, officials from IRCTC and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) recently demonstrated the beta version to the students in Jaipur and sought additional feedback to further improve the platform. The primary objective of the redesign is to eliminate the common problems faced by passengers while booking tickets.
The beta version is currently being integrated with the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation System (PRS). The nearly 40-year-old PRS engine is also undergoing an upgrade. Once that process is completed, the fully revamped IRCTC website is expected to be rolled out over the next few months.Meanwhile, railway officials revealed that the RailOne app, which offers a range of railway services, has already crossed 40 million downloads. Efforts are also underway to curb the use of bots during Tatkal ticket bookings, ensuring a fairer booking process for genuine passengers.Since online ticket booking was introduced in 2002, nearly 88% of railway tickets in India are now booked online. With such a large share of bookings taking place digitally, the Ministry of Railways has prioritized modernizing the IRCTC platform to provide a faster, more reliable, and seamless experience for passengers.
