The Union government has taken another significant step towards strengthening the combat capabilities of India’s tri-services. It has signed an agreement worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of low-level lightweight radars. The agreement was signed in Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement is aimed at enhancing the surveillance and detection capabilities of the armed forces through advanced radar technology.
The radars can detect and track fighter aircraft as well as mini and micro drones. Their capabilities are expected to support aerial surveillance and help the armed forces identify potential threats more effectively amid evolving security challenges. According to the Defence Ministry, the agreement is also aligned with the government’s broader vision of achieving a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047, while strengthening the country’s domestic defence sector.
