

India has achieved a historic milestone in civil registration, with birth and death registrations crossing the 99 percent mark for the first time in the country's history during 2024. The achievement reflects significant progress in strengthening the country's civil registration system and ensuring accurate population records.
According to the Civil Registration System (CRS) report released by the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, 99.1 percent of the estimated births, amounting to 25,473,389 registrations, and 99.4 percent of the estimated deaths, totaling 8,938,301 registrations, were officially recorded during 2024. The report marks a major step forward in improving the efficiency and coverage of India's registration system.
