Illegal Oxytocin Use in Dairy Cattle Raises Concerns Over Milk Safety and Public Health

Milk is an important part of the diet for many families, particularly children. However, concerns have been raised over the illegal use of oxytocin injections in dairy cattle to increase milk let-down and production. Normally, after giving birth, cows and buffaloes release hormones that help with milk let-down, particularly in response to the presence of their calves. According to the report, some dairy operators allegedly administer oxytocin shortly before milking and during the initial days after the animal gives birth. Such use has been prohibited by the government, and authorities have warned against the illegal sale, storage and administration of the drug.

The report also highlights concerns about animal welfare and milk safety. Medical experts cited in the report have raised concerns about possible health effects from inappropriate or illegal oxytocin use, while veterinary authorities have warned of adverse effects on cattle. The government has reportedly prohibited the use of such injections since 2018, with legal action applicable to illegal sale, distribution and storage. Despite the restrictions, the report alleges that some suppliers secretly bring the injections from Bihar and sell them to dairy farmers by promising higher milk yields. Animal Husbandry officials said the drug is completely prohibited and urged people to report illegal use or sale. They also said awareness programmes are being conducted among dairy farmers regarding the harmful effects of misuse. The district reportedly collects up to 10 lakh litres of milk daily, including around 9 lakh litres of cow milk and 1 lakh litres of buffalo milk. The reported livestock population includes 2,87,713 cows and 21,440 buffaloes.
